French handmade cloth boxes originate from the 18th-century European handicraft "cartonnage", which refers to objects cut and assembled from thick cardboard (carton) and wrapped with fabric to create works of art.
It started in Valreas, a small town in southern France, where silkworm farmers ordered cartons for transporting silkworm eggs, and gradually developed into various boxes made of cotton-covered cardboard!
