Seto yaki originated from Seto City, Aichi Prefecture. It is one of the six ancient kilns in Japan. This place is one of the largest ceramic raw material production areas in Japan, and primitive pottery production began in the Jomon period (じょうもんじだい) about 12,000 years ago.
The real glory period of Seto Yaki was from the beginning of the Kamakura period (twelfth century) to the end of the Muromachi period (the end of the fifteenth century), about 300 years in between.
Ancient Seto refers to the Seto ware produced in the 12th to 15th centuries. The work is basically only made of gray glaze and iron glaze, which is solid and simple.
Today's Seto-yaki made with the same glaze and style may also be called Ko-Seto.
