Seto-yaki originates from Seto City, Aichi Prefecture. It is one of the six ancient kilns in Japan. This place is one of the largest producers of ceramic raw materials in Japan. Primitive pottery production began during the Jomon Period (じょうもんじだい) about 12,000 years ago.

The true glory period of Seto Ware was from the beginning of the Kamakura period (twelfth century) to the end of the Muromachi period (the end of the fifteenth century), about 300 years in between.

Ancient Seto refers to Seto ware produced between the 12th and 15th centuries. The work is basically made using only gray glaze and iron glaze, which is simple and simple.

Today's Seto ware made with the same glaze and style may also be called ancient Seto.
